Hebrew Scams |

Are there such things as 'SCAM's when learning Hebrew?
Most Hebrew dealers on the internet are very reputable. However, you can waste a lot of time and money if you are not careful. For example, if you order the wrong product, and have to send it back, you waste at least an hour of your time, even if the vendor gives a prompt and courteous refund. You might have to stand in line at the post office to return the item, which alone could cost you 30 minutes of your time. Then, you typically have to cough up the money for the return postage.
However, to avoid being scammed and cheated out of your valueable time and money, I recommend the following steps are precautions:
- Require a video demonstration of the product before you buy it. In other words, don't buy something site-unseen. A good video demonstration should give you an idea the quality fo the product, and let you know if it will meet your needs.
- Listen to an audio sample of the file before you buy it. Make sure that the audio quality is good, and that the program uses Israeli speakers.
- Check out the guarantee made by the vendor. Make sure they have at least a 30-day money back, no questions-asked guarantee. Make sure they don't have a lot of paperwork to fill out in order to get the refund.
- Make sure the company has good technical support. Do they have a phone number listed on their web site? Do they have a ticket support system, where you can report any problems, and be sure it will get attended to on a timely basis?
- Make sure they support your operating system? Look for Windows and MAC logos.
When I was in Israel in 1996, I spent several hundred dollars on a few Hebrew and Talmud products, and I was very disappointed when I got home and tried them. Some of them actually ran in the 'DOS Prompt', rather than under Windows. Another once had a very mechanical computerized voice that tried to pronounce the words. Yet another Biblical program I tried, the accent was horrible. I couldn't stand to listen to it, even though the grammar may have been correct.
On this website, we provide video demonstrations of almost every product. Check the website itself, and also double check the shopping cart to find the video demos. If the product is an audio-only product, check the shopping cart for an MP3 player that plays a sample from that product.
We mostly carry products from four reputable vendors:
- Our own product line (HebrewResources.com).
- Davka
- Hebrew World
- Ulpan Or (from Israel)
If you are a beginner, and looking for how to get started, I recommend watching our video demonstrations of 'At Home with Hebrew'. (Click anywhere on this line to view the videos now.)
